Good idea hanging the food away from the camp. We would even have really loud pots, pans or bells attaches to it, so we could hear if something was getting into it. The idea was also to scare off the animal with the noise but I have a feeling a hungry bear wouldn't care how loud they were (based on the mess I've seen them make in cabins which obviously would have made some noise).

i love backpacking and really need to do more of it. The biggest problem I have is the weight of the food on my back. For that reason, I love freeze dried foods for backpacking.

Camping is a great pass time for me but i admit there have been times when on long voyages i really wished for a change in my diet. Me and my friends used to go to an army surplus store and by army ration packs which are boil in a bag. These are fantastic as they are calorie dense which is a welcome meal after walking for 6 or 7 hours.

Thanks very much for these ideas.

I'm glad to see that a discussion of backpack food includes a bit on "Food Safety To Help Avoid Bears". But even if not hiking in bear country we need to be concerned about smaller critters such as raccoons.

My husband took a group of Cub Scouts on a camping trip and despite warnings about not keeping food in their tents, one of the boys decided to sneak a bag of potato chips in with him and eat them in his tent.

Well that night he awoke to find a raccoon sitting on his chest. His screams not only scared off the coon, it awoke the whole camp. He learned his lesson :)
